I am searching for a word in a pdf, but copernic only finds it if the word is part of file name. I tried several different pdfs (file produced in word and saved as pdf, pdf from scan, merged pdf from different single files.

I'm sure your PDF file is an "image only" file. Try running OCR (optical character recognition) on it, either via a scanned copy or directly from the digital file you have. There are standalone OCR programs (e.g. ABBYY Fine Reader), probably some free ware, and several online OCR services.
